A major train accident was averted after the captain of a passenger train spotted a pile of sand dumped on the tracks in Uttar Pradesh’s La Bareilly district.

According to police, the incident took place near Raghuraj Singh station Raebareli on the evening of Sunday and Monday (October 6-7).

Following an alert from the locomotive pilot, the track was cleared of mud and rail traffic resumed.

Speaking about the incident, an official from Rai Bareilly police said, “A small pile of soil was dumped on the railway tracks, leading to the interception of the shuttle bus from Rai Bareilly.”

Locals reported that road construction was underway in the area, requiring the use of dump trucks to move earth at night. Police officer Devendra Bhadoria said a tipper truck driver carrying earth dumped the load onto the railway tracks and escaped on Sunday night.

He added that further investigation into the matter was ongoing.

In early September this year, a major train accident was narrowly averted after an LPG cylinder was found on the tracks near Perampur railway station in Kanpur district of Uttar Pradesh. The cylinder was found in front of a freight train, prompting the locomotive’s pilot to brake promptly.
