DMK and Congress Locked in Dispute Over Waterlogging Crisis in Chennai Following Heavy Rains

After heavy rains hit Chennai on Wednesday night, the DMK (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) and Congress engaged in a lively exchange on social media regarding the resulting waterlogging issues in the city.

Karti P Chidambaram, a Congress MP from Sivaganga, shared a news clip showing flooding in Chennai with a cheeky message that read “Race Road or Rain Road.” He tagged the Greater Chennai Corporation, hinting at the poor condition of the roads, especially since Chennai had recently hosted a Formula Night Race.

In response, DMK spokesperson Sarvanan Annadurai made a light-hearted comment questioning if one could accurately measure rainfall from indoors. He reminisced about past criticisms directed at the government during rainy weather, suggesting that it was unreasonable to expect accurate assessments of rain intensity without being outside.

Amidst this online banter, Chennai Mayor Priya Rajan took action by inspecting flooded areas, including the Perambur subway. She also checked on ongoing construction work for rainwater canals. The heavy rains caused significant waterlogging in various parts of Chennai, particularly affecting Koyambedu.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that between 8:30 AM and 5:30 AM the following day, Nungambakkam recorded 7.42 cm of rain while Menambakkam saw 7.12 cm. Other areas like Tiruvallur and Vellore also experienced heavy rainfall. The weather forecast indicates light to moderate rain will continue over North Tamil Nadu throughout the week.

The rains disrupted power supply in several neighborhoods and caused traffic jams across the city. Residents faced challenges due to waterlogged streets as they navigated their daily routines.

This exchange highlights ongoing concerns about infrastructure and governance in Chennai, especially regarding how well the city can manage heavy rainfall and prevent flooding.
