West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday inaugurated a Durga Puja pandal themed on the Tirupati Vishnu temple in Kolkata, kicking off the biggest festival for Bengalis in the state .
Banerjee’s inauguration of Pandal at Sreebhumi Sporting Club in Kolkata’s Lake Town took place a day ahead of Mahalaya, who is believed to be the goddess The day when Durga comes to earth after killing the demon Mahishashur.
The Sreebhumi Sporting Club, a community puja sponsored by state minister Sujit Bose, made a replica of the Vishnu temple in Tirupati to mark the occasion. There is also a statue of Lord Vishnu in the Panda Garden.
Every Durga Puja in Kolkata, other parts of West Bengal and other parts of the country is designed according to eye-catching themes that highlight the uniqueness and excitement of the festival.
Meanwhile, Banerjee is expected to inaugurate the remaining Durga altars and idols from Wednesday. She announced the beginning of Durga Puja celebrations.
The Chief Minister will also inaugurate many Durga puja pandals in many districts after Mahalaya along with Sreebhumi Sports Club.
This year Durga Puja will begin on October 8 and end on October 13 with the idol immersion of Goddess Durga.
