Police in Uttar Pradesh have tracked down a woman who was thought dead nearly three years after she went missing from her in-laws’ house. The woman was found living with her boyfriend in Lucknow, police said.
Kavita (23), who belongs to Gonda, got married to Vinay Kumar, a resident of Dadua Bazaar, on November 17, 2017. However, she disappeared from her in-laws’ house on May 5, 2021, triggering a legal dispute between the two parties. Family members and her in-laws filed murder and kidnapping cases against each other.
Gonda Superintendent of Police (SP) Vineet said, “Kavita’s family accused her in-laws of murder, leading to a case being registered against her husband, brother-in-law, mother-in-law and sister-in-law,” Jaiswal said.
Despite an extensive search, Kavita remains missing. In December 2022, Kavita’s husband Vinay Kumar also filed a case against six people, including Kavita’s brother Akhilesh, accusing them of kidnapping her.
According to SP Jaiswal, two investigations are ongoing but no progress has been made in locating Kavita. The matter has been brought to the High Court seeking details of the police action.
Later, the police found Kavita at her boyfriend Satya Narayan Gupta’s house in Lucknow.
“Satya Narayan owned a shop in Durjanpur market in Gonda and Kavita often visited him. Their relationship grew closer, leading her to Elope with him,” the SP said.
During interrogation, Kavita said that she lived with her boyfriend in Ayodhya for a year before moving to Lucknow.
Kavita is currently undergoing medical examination and will appear in court.
