Mumbai businessman Philip Shah jumps to death from Atal Setu, second incident in three days

A 52-year-old businessman allegedly committed suicide by jumping from the Atal Setu sea bridge connecting Mumbai to Navi Mumbai, police said on Thursday.

The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, was the second such suicide in Atasetu in three days, after a banker ended his life in a similar manner on Monday.

Businessman Philip Shah jumped to his death from Atal Setu on Wednesday morning. Shah, a resident of Matunga in central Mumbai, parked his car somewhere on Atal Setu and jumped into the sea,” he said.

The staff in the bridge monitoring room discovered a car parked on the bridge and immediately alerted the rescuers. The rescuers rushed to the spot where Shah jumped into the sea and found him after a search. ,” he said.

He was rushed to hospital but was pronounced dead on admission, police officials said.

The deceased was identified based on the Aadhaar card found in the car, he said, adding that the victim was apparently suffering from mental stress in the last few days before his death.

He said a case of accidental death was registered at Navashiva police station in Navi Mumbai.

The “Atal Bihari Vajpayee Sewri-Nhava Sheva Atal Setu”, also known as the Mumbai Cross Harbor Link (MTHL), connects southern Mumbai to the satellite city of Navi Mumbai and was inaugurated in January this year. The six-lane bridge is 21.8 kilometers long and is said to be the longest sea-crossing bridge in the country.
