The principal of a government school in Jajpur, Odisha, has been issued an absentee notice for attending school in an drunken state, an official said.
The principal is employed in a primary school in Dharmasala, Jajpur. The incident came to light after the school management committee and several parents reported the matter to the block education officer, demanding strict action.
The official issued the notice on Thursday, giving principals three days to respond.
Parents and school management also demanded that the principal be immediately transferred to another school on the grounds that he frequently arrived at school drunk.
A video of the principal in a drunken state went viral and was played to the committee. In the video, the principal can be seen lying on the road a few meters away from the school.
Dharmasala block education officer Abhijit Barik said appropriate action will be taken based on the principal’s response.
“We have issued a show-cause notice to the principal and asked him to reply within three days. Once we receive the reply, we will take appropriate action accordingly,” he was quoted as saying by the Press Trust of India news agency.
This is not the first time a teacher has come to school drunk. Three similar cases were reported from Jajpur district last year.
Similar incidents have been reported in other states. In March this year, students from a primary school in Bastar, Chhattisgarh, threw slippers at a drunken teacher to drive him away.
In February this year, a teacher in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, was suspended for arriving at school drunk.
