Islamabad: Authorities in Pakistan are making efforts to arrest Bushra Bibi, the wife of former prime minister Imran Khan, who is in jail for failing to appear in court in an alleged £190 million corruption case. According to ‘Express Tribune’, the crackdown is being taken after the decision given by the accountability court on November 22. A non-bailable warrant was issued against Bushra as she had been absent for eight consecutive hearings.
Bushra Bibi lives in Peshawar
Justice Nasir Javed Rana rejected his plea for exemption from appearing in court. Following this directive, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has asked its team from Rawalpindi to arrest Bushra Bibi, officials said. Bushra Bibi is believed to be living in Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Khan’s party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf is in power in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The police returned empty-handed
The Express Tribune reported that a NAB team went to Peshawar with the police on November 23, but had to return empty-handed. Officials said that when the team showed the arrest warrant at Bushra Bibi’s house, it was found that she was not present at home.
The allegations are serious
Both Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi are accused of misappropriating 50 billion Pakistani rupees (190 million pounds), which were returned to Pakistan by Britain’s National Crime Agency under a deal with the property businessman. The money was meant for the national treasury, but was used for the personal benefit of a businessman who helped Bushra and Khan establish the university. Bibi is accused of profiting from the deal as a trustee of the Al-Qadir Trust. Bushra is also accused of acquiring 458 kanals of land for Al-Qadir University in Jhelum. (language)
