Post-Monsoon: Delhi-NCR Faces Rising Pollution as Air Quality Index Hits Moderate Levels

Delhi-NCR faces rising pollution as monsoon season recedes

As the monsoon season recedes from the Delhi-NCR, pollution levels are rising again. The city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded as “moderate” on Thursday, with a 24-hour average of 162, marking the start of a challenging air quality season.

Severe pollution levels have been reported in some areas. Anand Vihar, near the Delhi-Ghaziabad border, recorded a 24-hour air quality index of 389, which falls in the “very poor” category, close to “severe”. Other districts such as Mundka, Dwarka and Wazirpur reported AQI levels above 200, which are considered “poor”.

The main reason for the deterioration in air quality is dry and westerly winds, which cause dust particles, especially PM10, to become the main pollutant in the city.

Pollution has also increased in nearby areas. Ghaziabad’s air quality index was 178 and Noida’s reached 172, both above Delhi’s average. Baghpat has the highest pollution level in the region, with an air quality index of 198, still classified as “moderate” but close to “poor”.
