Final Fantasy XVI was released exclusively on PS5 in 2023, and the game finally came to PC last month. The action RPG is still not available on Xbox, and there are no confirmed plans to release on Microsoft’s console. Now, publisher Square Enix has provided the latest news on the possible release of Final Fantasy 16 on Xbox Series S/X.
Final Fantasy XVI on Xbox
Square Enix hopes to release an Xbox port of Final Fantasy XVI, but the company has yet to confirm a specific timeline, according to Final Fantasy XVI producer and industry legend Naoki Yoshida, better known as Yoshi-P.
“Of course, we did announce a PC version of the game, so looking ahead to the Xbox version, we do want to release it on Xbox,” Yoshida said on Video Game interview Released last week. “But when it comes to specific details like when the game will be available, we can’t share anything,” he added.
However, the producer asked Xbox players not to give up hope, saying that Square Enix very much hopes to port the game to Xbox. “But, of course, I would say it’s not zero hope and we very much want to get there. So players shouldn’t give up their hope.”
Neither Square Enix nor Microsoft have confirmed an Xbox port of Final Fantasy XVI.
Final Fantasy XVI was first released on PS5 on June 22, 2023. The game recently made the jump to PC, releasing on Steam and the Epic Games Store on September 17th. The full version, which bundles the main game with Echoes of the Fallen and the Rising Tide expansion pack, was also recently launched on PS5.
Square Enix recently launched its Final Fantasy game exclusively on PS5, a strategy that ultimately hurt sales. Earlier this year, the publisher said in an earnings report that recent sales of big-budget games had been disappointing. Company CEO Takashi Kiryu said sales of “Final Fantasy VII Rebirth”, “Final Fantasy XVI” and “Foamstars” (all PlayStation exclusives) fell short of expectations in terms of revenue and profit.
As a result, Square Enix has since undergone considerable restructuring and abandoned the practice of releasing major games on PlayStation first. Kiryu said that a major future release will be a multi-platform release across PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Xbox and PC.
