The Impact of the South on India’s Population: Naidu and Stalin’s Agreement on Elderly Numbers

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has asked the people of the state to have more than two children. On the other hand, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin also recommended that everyone have 16 children. Interestingly, Chandrababu Naidu belongs to the BJP alliance while Stalin belongs to the Congress alliance. However, the BJP and Congress have always believed that the country’s population growth is hindering the country’s development. India’s population is approximately 1.4 billion. Since there is no census taking place in 2021, this assessment is based on 2011 data only. About 60% of the population is from Hindi speaking states. Southern states believed that if this ratio continued, they would never be able to intervene effectively in the country’s politics. Their ambitions will be limited to their territory.

Of the 543 seats in the Indian Parliament, South India has only 131 seats. Hindi states alone hold less than half of the seats. Of the remaining seats, Maharashtra has 48 seats and West Bengal has 42 seats. There are 26 seats in Gujarat, 13 seats in Punjab, 5 seats in Jammu and Kashmir and 21 seats in Odisha. Apart from Assam’s 14 seats, the remaining northeastern states Manipur, Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh have two seats each. One each from Sikkim, Nagaland, Mizoram and Meghalaya. Clearly, the country’s Hindi-speaking states are the driving force behind its politics. As per their inclination, western and eastern India will also go with the north. Because they all share the same cultural identity. So what is left with the five southern states (Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu)? Apart from this, there are the federal state of Puducherry and the federal territory of Lakshadweep in the south. There is a Lok Sabha seat here.

Now, if the population rate continues to decline, the southern states’ representation in Congress will continue to decline in the same proportion. Stalin also expressed this concern in his statement. Chandrababu Naidu said if the state’s population rate decreases, then the elderly population will increase and the young population will decrease. If there are fewer working young people, how will the employment target be achieved? Where do taxes come from? If it cannot receive it, how will the government spend it? Even in a populous country like China, having fewer children has become a problem facing the government. In China, 30 years ago, the government said one child was enough to reduce the growing population. 25 years later, the situation has completely reversed, and couples are now encouraged to have two children.

Countries such as Russia, Italy, Portugal, Germany and Canada are also experiencing shrinking youth populations. What all these countries are now worried about is the rise in their elderly populations. Caring for an older population is very difficult. They can no longer work and often fall ill. Because of this, their expenses are also quite high. Most countries are required to invite immigrants into their country. The result has been a change in the socio-demographic structure of these countries. Sooner or later these immigrants will be entitled to citizenship there. These people then became the controllers of politics there. Today, Canada’s Sikh population continues to grow and they have gained so much power politically that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has now become a puppet in their hands.

Likewise, the number of Sikhs in Punjab is declining rapidly. They travel to Canada in search of work and their labor force comes from Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh. Many people have now settled there and invited their families. The result is that Hindi and Bhojpuri are widely spoken in Punjab. It is popular not only in Punjab but also in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Andhra people have settled in various countries around the world. Telugu Bittas are available everywhere. They have their own grocery stores and temples in many countries across the United States. People from the Hindi-speaking areas of India returned to their hometowns to find work and settle down. A large number of Hindi-Urdu speaking people arrived in Hyderabad when Andhra Pradesh was yet to form Telangana state. It was popularized by Chandrababu Naidu himself. Network cities have both advantages and disadvantages.

Same goes for Tamil Nadu. Like Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu also became the first commercial and industrial state in the country. During the British rule, both states were governed by Madras. Only Hyderabad and surrounding areas came under the jurisdiction of the Nizam. That’s why many businesses thrive here. Once upon a time, the Sahukarpesh area of Madras was crowded with traders from other states of India. Although you may not find anywhere in Madras where Hindi is spoken, Hindi is widely spoken here. Rotisserie, beans and rice are all available here. This was the base of Marwari, Sindhi, Gujarati, Punjabi and other traders. But Jayalalithaa changed the face of Tamil Nadu. Drinking water is now available in every city and village in Tamil Nadu. The road network has been laid and electrification has been completed. Therefore, labor from various provinces is easily found here.

Local labor is expensive everywhere, while labor in other areas is relatively cheap. As industrialization grew, so did the region’s middle class. This middle class is the largest consumer. Luxury goods consumption began to increase. Therefore, both husband and wife have to work from home. Clearly, the demand for domestic workers and drivers has increased. This is provided by a mobile workforce. Every ten years, these migrant workers start doing small jobs. When the local craftsmen (carpenters, blacksmiths, plumbers, etc.) left here for better wages, people from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh came here to take their place. Today, these immigrants work as barbers in villages across Tamil Nadu. As these people settled, their needs increased and more people arrived.

The thing today is that North Indian dhabas and restaurants can be found even in remote areas of South Indian states. Crowds gather at the lake during Chhath Puja. The same goes for Diwali and Holi. Until thirty years ago, these festivals were virtually unknown here. Now, anti-Hindi is disappearing in Tamil Nadu too. No Hindi, no English, just Tamil, no one speaks now. Many students from North India come here to study in private engineering colleges. Tiffins are served by the wives of workers and small craftsmen from these parts of northern India. That’s why these people also make money. They build houses there and their children study there. Now everyone there speaks two or three languages.

But because of all these changes, not only is society changing, but politics is also changing. These immigrants prefer national parties to regional ones. On the surface they may welcome the DMK, AIDMK or TDP, but internally their choice is the Congress or the Bharatiya Janata Party. Since the Congress is a very old party, with Congress governments before and after independence, it already has a support base. But by 1967, everything fell apart and regional parties came to dominate in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. But since 2014, the BJP has also built a base in the southernmost state of Tamil Nadu. Well, things started looking up in Andhra Pradesh a long time ago. She runs the government in Karnataka. But Tamil Nadu and Kerala are also preparing their vote banks.
