Violence between Shia and Sunni Muslims continues in Pakistan, killing 122 people so far

Peshawar: The death toll in violence has risen to 122 after two people were killed in fresh incidents of firing despite a ceasefire between Sunni and Shia communities in different parts of Pakistan’s restive northwest region’s Kurram district. Police and hospital officials gave this information on Friday.

The violence started last week

Violence broke out between the Sunni and Shiite communities last week, and minor clashes have continued despite the ceasefire. Another exchange of fire broke out between the two communities on Thursday, in which two people were killed while six were injured. Following the violence, Governor Faisal Karim Kundi on Friday asked Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur to visit the troubled area.

Violence spread

Let us tell you that, a day after an attack on a van carrying passengers near Parachinar in Kurram district, bordering Afghanistan, on November 21, violence erupted between the Alizai and Bagan tribal groups in the district. 47 people were killed in the attack on the passenger van. Several seriously injured passengers died during treatment, taking the death toll in the attack to 57. At least 37 people were killed and many injured in the violence that broke out between the two communities in the Bagan Bazar area last Friday and Saturday. Soon after this, the violence spread to other places in the district including Balishkhel, Khar, Kali, Junj Alizai and Maqbal.

Violence continued even after the ceasefire

Police and hospital sources said at least 65 people have been killed in the ongoing firing till Friday. Earlier on Sunday, the government imposed a seven-day ceasefire between the Shia and Sunni communities, which was later extended to 10 days, police said. Despite the ceasefire, sporadic clashes between the two communities continued. “The death toll in the ongoing communal violence in Kurram since November 21 has risen to 122 till Friday, while 145 people have been injured,” police and hospital sources said.
